Italian-bred Iceland Poppies (Colibri series) produce noticeably larger blooms than standard Iceland poppies. While each plant carries slightly fewer stems, they more than make up for it with exceptionally beautiful, richly coloured flowers that really stand out in the garden and vase. When grown for cut flowers, Colibri poppies should be harvested a little later than regular varieties. Rather than cutting at the usual “split bud” stage, wait until the pod has fully released from the stem base—this ensures the blooms open more reliably after harvest.
