A delicious salad onion with juicy, mild, crisp flesh. Lovely, red, elongated bulbs perfect when picked young. The flavour gets stronger the longer it is left to mature. The bulbs start to increase in size with longer days and grow approximately 8-10cm. The ground should be well prepared and nice and warm when planting directly outdoors; once the plants have started growing it’s a good idea to mulch around them to conserve moisture. Plant your rows about 20cm apart. Side dressing with some all purpose fertiliser a couple of times in the first couple of months is advisable, but should cease two months before harvesting.
Onion can be started in punnets indoors up to around 10 weeks before planting out, but be sure you have a nice light warm area while they grow. Plant seed approx 2.5cm apart and cover with 5mm of seed raising mix. When transplanting the plants should be at least 5-7cm, bury the crowns 2.5cm into the well prepared soil. Mulching to conserve moisture is recommended.
